Summary: You will read about another set of important Spanish explorers in these pages; in some ways equally important in their contribution to the Columbian Exchange as was Columbus himself. Be sure that you understand why Legazpi and Urdaneta traveled to the Philippines in 1565 and how they accomplished what Columbas set out to do in 1492. Pay particular attention to the links that were established among China, Mexico, and Span and the economic and biological foundation for these relationships. Silver plays a central role in all of this. Appreciate how this was beneficial on one hand and detrimental on the other for both Spain and China, not to mention the slaves working in the mines of Central and South America.

Essay: There are two parts to this assignment that you need to turn in. For your essay detail how and why silver became the "glue" that cemented the economic connections among China, Mexico, and Spain. Be sure you explain where the silver was coming from, who was moving it to where, and what is was used for. In addition, discuss why China and Spain made great efforts to limit this exchange despite the benefits silver brought to both countries.
The poster you will create will diagram the interconnections you write about in your essay. In addition to silver, include on your diagram other commodities that were moving among these three countries as a consequence of the exchange of silver. If you can create an online version of this poster, we will post it to the blog along with your essay, but this is not required for this assignment. In either case, try to use as many graphics such as pictures, drawings, and charts as possible.
