The Future of Life, The Solution
Terms and Concepts: Understand how Wilson has restated the fundamental “bottleneck” problem in the opening paragraph of the last chapter. Appreciate that here he states the problem in the language of economics. Know the two collateral consequences that this problem has created on economic and environmental grounds. Appreciate that the solution Wilson is proposing starts not from the point of view of science and technology, but from an ethical point of view. Be aware of the role of religion in this process of reconciling competing views of how to best use and save our environment.
Understand the typical environmentalist and people-first stereotypes that Wilson feels we must get past in order to make progress toward a solution. Be able to state their positions with examples. Appreciate that these two views are not a polar as we often see them presented in the media.
Consider the rapid changes in our global society, the rise of capitalism, democracy, and technology that will require that a solution to the destruction of the biosphere to use a synthesis of both these points of view. Starting on page 160 Wilson outlines 12 points that he feels can form the basis for the solution to the environmental problems facing us. Understand each of these points and their implications for changes at the local, national, and international level. In particular look at the role of non-governmental organizations in the solution compared to the role of governments.
