Assignment 15, Chapters 13-15

Desert Solitaire, chapters 13-15

Terms and Concepts: These three chapters give us a picture of the dual emotions that this desert environment brings out in Abbey. The first chapter gives a description of the beautiful country populated by warm and inviting native Americans only to be contrasted with the dangerous canyon trip in which Abbey almost becomes stranded. The second chapter gives us a stark picture of what can go terribly wrong when a desert traveler does not give the environment due respect. Finally Abbey escapes into the mountains in the last chapter to take refuge from the heat of the desert, giving us another view of Abbeys love for this place.

Essay: Write a one-page essay describing the dual nature of Abbey's relationship with the desert and surrounding areas. What is it about his environment that is dissatisfying and what elements of the desert does he understand need to be treated with caution and deference? Be sure to use specific examples from the book.
