Desert Solitaire, Chapters 16-18
|
Terms and Concepts: In the first of these chapters Abbey takes a detour to discuss religion and his biases become obvious. He does not have much good to say about religion or tourists which he damns together in the same breath of this chapter. But he does understand the need for both as well as part of the culture that infests our civilization. Finally this first chapter ends with another eloquent statement of the personal value the desert has to Abbey. The second chapter is a brief adventure into the canyons once again, and you finish the book with his goodbye to the desert for the winter season.

Essay: Write a one-page essay in the style of a book reviewer. Tell the potential reader what this book is really about (much more than a man's story about living in the desert). Convince the reader to go read the book and why he/she will find it entertaining and thoughtful. Take any position you want about the value of this book, but be sure to defend your arguments and use examples.
