Assignment 06, Area-Species Principle

The Future of Life, Nature's Last Stand

  • First draft due: 3 November
  • Comments due: 5 November
  • Final draft due: 7 November

Essay: Why does Wilson feel that the tropical rainforests are the "headquarters of global diversity?" Explain why the area-species principle applies to these forest as well as to islands. Discuss in detail how forestry and road building have had devastating and widespread affects on the torpical forests of the Amazon and Asia. Be sure to show how these activities often have complicated unexpected consequences on diversity, the health of the forests, and even the climate.
