In the prologue of The Future of Life, by E.O. Wilson, comparisons are made between Wilson, Thoreau, and Darwin. In the text, Wilson describes a subtle personal connection, and a large connection of theories of the three scientists. Both Darwin and Thoreau contributed to the studies of Wilson today. Their theories and studies were the foundations of Wilson's career as a naturalist. The connection between all three of these brilliant scientists, show the importance of change of theories and ideas, and that advancement in technology helps further along studies that could not be completed before. All three men were influential forces in trying to spread education about the natural world and the human race's duty to protect and care for it.
When Wilson first brings up the studies of Darwin, he states, "I know more than Darwin knew." Which is true. Wilson has many technological advances that Darwin had no access to in his day. These three men all show the progression and advancements in the scientific world. For example,Darwin's theory on evolution, the idea that organisms change over time in order to adapt to their natural surroundings and fulfill their needs. In the text, Wilson mentions how studying at Walden Pond effects him personally, because he was so motivated and inspired by Thoreau's works and studies there. Wilson also mentions Darwin's grandchild, which also shows a personal relationship between the scientists, and even though they never met, the are personally, intellectually, respectfully connected to one another. and Although,at first, Darwin's theory was rejected by many, after years of discussion, people started to believe this theory may be true and began to accept it. Thoreau, strongly influenced by Darwin's theory of evolution, spent the majority of his time studying the natural world and it's organisms at Walden Pond. Thoreau applied the studies of Darwin to his own life, and lived a life of solitude, and continued his studies at Walden Pond always reflecting back to Darwin's theories and ideas. After Thoreau died, Wilson continued on where Thoreau left off. He began to look closely at the Walden Pond area and discovered its significance in the environmental movement. Wilson used his technological advances and took parts of what Darwin and Thoreau proposed and used them in his own theories and ideas. The connection between all three men is clearly shown in their work. Without the studies of Darwin and Thoreau, Wilson's work and studies would have been completely different.
The hard work that both Darwin and Thoreau put into their successful studies strongly impacted the work of Wilson as a naturalist. Their advances in their days were stepping stones for Wilson. The information and ideas the two men brought fourth were the foundation of Wilson's studies. All three men discovered important evidence and facts that some how affected one another down the line. All their theories and ideas are strongly connected, and reflect the advancements of the world, and the advancement in not only technology, but education.
