Unit 11: Evolution
This unit deals with one of the most important, difficult, and at times controversial topics in biology. Evolution is the central unifying theme that runs through all of the biological sciences. Often, evolution is not explicitly recognized by biologists as they study cell respiration, muscle physiology, etc., but there can be little doubt that the study of biology achieves its fullest potential and significance when evolutionary ideas form the foundational theory of biological inquiry. We will look at the evidence for the fact that evolution has taken place as well as study the important mechanisms that allowed that evolution to take place.
Learning objectives: the successful student will be able to ...
- define and explain the definition of "evolution" in terms of population biology and genetics.
- describe the contributions of Charles Darwin, Alfred Russell Wallace,
